Harmoni has a lot of terms you may be unfamiliar with. This glossary offers clear definitions to help you understand and use Harmoni. You can search term alphabetically by keyword to find definitions, related articles, and associated user roles.

Any single number in an analysis view can have a threshold or significance setting applied to it as an alert. When data is updated, and the threshold is met, a data alert is sent and changes can be viewed via the notifications panel or in the ALERTS area. |

Analysis default settings |
The default settings in Harmoni are the out of the box settings when you start interacting with Harmoni to create an analysis. Some analysis default settings can be altered to suit your analysis settings and you can change settings on the fly as you create your analysis, for example, changing the default calculation types. |

Apply Base |
In an analysis, instead of using the default Total, the base can be forced to be a predefined value (an applied base). Harmoni allows you to apply a base to an axis, an element, or multiple items. A base applied in the project tree changes the denominator used when calculating percentages and averages in an analysis. |

Append data sources |
Append allows you to add new variables to respondents or cases within a project when information of common respondents is captured in separate data sources. |

Automation |
When a new source is loaded into a project, Harmoni applies first pass automation. During updates, Harmoni automatically assigns the project definitions applied to previous sources. Automated design is applied unless you are using Infotools x-files or you specifically unselect the option when loading your sources. |

Auto Run lets you control when the data is processed. Switch the toggle off to stop the data processing automatically. This allows you to build out the table structure before running the analysis. |

In an analysis, the base is used when calculating percentages and averages. In Harmoni, the default base is the Total. Different bases can be applied either by changing the Total Type or using apply base in the project tree. |

Calculation types are the values you see in an analysis or chart. The default calculation types of counts (123), percentages (%) and differences (DIFF) are always available in the Format section of the Modify menu. When you load data files without an inherent dictionary, you need to define the data source by confirming the variable type mapping when you load the data. The data is organized hierarchically, with parent records (respondents) linked to multiple child records (events). |

Published vs. private variables |
Variables created by the Project Owner are public variables that can be published to other users. Publish |
The Publish option allows the Project Owner to shar the project and data with others. Publish is enabled every time there is a change in the project tree or when new data becomes available. Split/Nest |
When analyzing a grid, after dragging the item to the analysis area, you have the option to Split or Nest the grid. Split: Separates the axis into one drop zone and the elements into the other, creating a crosstab. Nest: Adds the grid into the selected drop zone with the axes nested over the elements. |

Time slider |
When visualizing an analysis with a time axis that has more than 13 time periods, Harmoni displays a time slider at the bottom of the chart. The 13 most recent time periods display and you can slide to reveal patterns over time. The table automatically scrolls to the far right to show your latest results in view. |

Total Type |
Harmoni lets you easily choose the right base or denominator to calculate percentages and averages. Choose from Total, Total (qualified), Total (analysis), and Total (view). Use the Totals ON/OFF toggle to easily add or remove totals from the analysis table. |

Unlisted Access |
Unlisted access is one of Harmoni's permission groups. Users with this kind of access can only access a work item, e.g., a Story or Dashboard, if they have/know the direct link or pathway to it. For Projects, all users must have unlisted access as a minimum for them to see the data associated with the project in the stories and dashboards shared with them. |

In Harmoni, a project contains different items or variable types; these include Headings, Axes, Linked Axes, Grids, Measures, Measure Groups, Weights, and Verbatims. Variables may come straight from the data, or be constructed using other variables from the data or numerical values. |
