Analyzing uncoded verbatims can be a daunting task. Harmoni helps you interact with verbatim comments, diving deeper to focus your analysis and reveal the true story. Create word clouds, filter by or exclude specific words, or leverage other project variables to refine your analysis.

1. Analyzing Verbatims
Drag and drop a verbatim variable into the Verbatim Analysis drop zone to create a Record View table. This allows you to see the verbatim comments from each respondent. A Word Cloud is also available to visualize the most frequently used words and the Split View lets you see both the responses and word cloud at the same time.
- Drag the verbatim to the Verbatim Analysis drop zone
- All respondent rows display with blank comments included
- Access the filter arrow and uncheck the Blanks check box
- Click Word Cloud to show the 30 most frequently used words
- Click Split View to see the verbatim table and word cloud in one view
2. Add/Replace Items
Add
To view verbatim responses alongside other relevant data, after dragging a verbatim to the drop zone, drag new items and use Add to include additional columns in your analysis. This allows you to view unstructured responses alongside other questions in the survey. You can include measures as additional columns.

Replace
Use Replace to replace items already in your analysis. You can replace any item, including the initial verbatim item you started with.

- Drag in new items and use Add to include additional columns of data.
- Replace items including the original verbatim and maintain the Record View analysis.
Replace a standard analysis
With a standard analysis active, you cannot add a verbatim axis to the analysis, but you can replace the existing analysis, retaining the active filters from the standard analysis.
Drag and drop a verbatim axis to the analysis area and you see the option to Replace Analysis. This creates a Record View with the active filters.
- Drag a verbatim axis to replace a standard analysis.
- Any filters in the standard analysis are retained in the Record View.
Revert to a Standard Analysis
Once you create a verbatim analysis, you need to Clear or Reset the analysis area if you want to create a standard analysis.
- The Replace option in the drop zone relates to the Record View format and will show the answers by respondent if you drag in a standard axis, not the aggregate total for each element.
- If you create a verbatim analysis by replacing an existing standard analysis, you cannot return to the previous analysis. Use Clear or Reset to begin another analysis.
3. Filtering Verbatims
There are three options for filtering verbatims. You can...
Filter by keywords
Once you have dragged in a verbatim variable, you can choose to filter the verbatims by specific words to narrow the list of comments. In the Record View table, type in the specific text or keyword into the search bar to find relevant responses. The word is highlighted with orange font.
You can export the filtered comments, but note that the export does not list the word(s) used for filtering.
- Type directly into the search bar and press enter
- The list of verbatims is filtered
- Use the X to clear the search
Filter the additional columns
You can filter additional items that are added to the existing verbatim analysis. At the top of each column is an option to filter dependent on the variable type. Use the drop-down arrow to select and filter by elements, or use the search bar to enter values (text or numbers).
- Using the drop-down arrows, select the elements to filter by
- Enter the value required in a measure variable
Filter drop zone
Once you have dragged in the verbatim variable, you can then drag a standard axis to the filter drop zone to filter the comments. For example, drag Gender to the filter drop zone to see the results based on the different gender elements.
- Drag Gender to the filter drop zone
- Change the filter in the interactive title
- You can Replace or Add filters if required
- The word cloud also updates
4. Interact with the Word Cloud
The word cloud displays the most commonly used words. You can use the search bar to filter the comments in the respondent table, but you can click a word to exclude or filter keywords based on the word cloud.
Exclude
When you exclude a word, you are removing all comments containing that word from your analysis. This helps to eliminate noise and irrelevant information, allowing you to focus your analysis.
After running a verbatim analysis, on the word cloud, click a word to access the drop-down menu. Click Exclude to remove the word from the word cloud. Note that this feature is case sensitive.
- Click a word in the word cloud and choose exclude to update the word cloud
- Click the Exclude menu to display the excluded words
- Repeat for any other words you need excluded
- You can restore individual or all keywords
Filter
When you filter by a word in the word cloud, you focus your analysis on comments that contain a specific word or words. Click on a word and select Filter to update the word cloud. All comments that contain the word are also displayed in the table. Words filtered are case sensitive and you may need to remove several versions of the word, e.g., Hotel and hotel.
Access the filter menu to remove the filter. When the word cloud is filtered by more than one word, the option to Remove All is available.
- Click a word in the word cloud and from the drop-down menu select filter
- Continue to filter as you need
- Click the filter menu and remove items individually or all at once
Filter by All or Any
Once the word cloud is filtered by two or more words, the options to filter by All and Any are available
- All: Only comments containing all the filtered words display
- Any: Comments containing any of the words display, i.e. one comment may only display one of the filtered words.
- Add a second filter to the word cloud.
- Access the Filter menu. The default option, All is selected.
- Change to Any and the comments are updated.
Although you can export the verbatim results, the PowerPoint or Excel export won't list the filtered or excluded word selected in the word cloud.
