It is important to understand how Harmoni displays the data in a table so that you know how to read the percentages. This article explains a simple way to know you're reading the percentages correctly.
In this article
1. Reading a Table
Harmoni defaults to column-based percentages (down percentages), and when reading a table it is useful to say this sentence to explain the data you see.
"Amongst those who are [read from the column], X% are from [read from the row]."
Column-based percentages mean that percentages are based on the Total for each column. To read a percentage, start at the top of the column, go down the column to the percentage, and then go to the left to read the metric.
Example:
"Amongst those who are 25 to 34 Years, 7% are from the United Kingdom."
You can also read the Percentages Base text in the interactive title to understand what the base is. Here you can see that the percentages are based on Age Grouped:
2. Reading a Table with Several Filters
Adding filters into your analysis table means that you just need to add the filter (or filters) into the sentence.
"Amongst those who are [read from the column], and are [read from the filters]
X% are [read from the row]."
Example:
"Amongst those who are 15 to 24 Years, and are travelling with a tour group,
and are female, 10% are from Japan."
3. Change the Percentage Direction
There are two options for changing the percentage direction from down percentages to across/row percentages.
- Using the Flip Percentages Base icon
- Using the Flip icon
Flip Percentages Base
Clicking on the Flip Percentages Base icon in the interactive title allows you to change the direction of the base.
- The interactive title tells you Top 5 Market percentages are based on Age (Grouped)
- Click the flip percentages base icon
- Age (Grouped) percentages are now based on Top 5 Markets
Percentage Base with a Nested Analysis
When you have a nested analysis, you can control how the percentages are calculated. In the following example, Top 5 Markets is nested over Travel Style (Grouped). The Travel Style (Grouped) percentages are based on Age (Grouped) and are displayed for each of the Top 5 Markets. You can change this by clicking on the interactive title and switching to Top 5 markets percentages based on Age (Grouped).
- The interactive title tells you Travel Style (Grouped) percentages are based on Age (Grouped)
- In this nested analysis, Travel Style (Grouped) percentages are displayed within each of the Top 5 Markets
- Click on the percentages base label to change the axis to Top 5 Markets
- Top 5 Markets percentages based on Age (Grouped) are now displayed
Flip
Instead of changing the Percentage Base option, a simple way to change the base is to flip the table. The percentage direction (down) remains the same, but the axes switch places.
