Instead of relying on the Total Type settings applied during analysis, a Project Owner can apply a base directly in the project tree. Explorers and non-owning Creators can apply bases to their own private variables.
In this article, we look at the behavior when applying bases during the project design to force the base to be a specific definition. You can set a base for an axis, an element, or multiple items. When you create an analysis, a base applied in the project tree becomes the default base and changes the denominator when calculating percentages or averages and when filtering the analysis.
In this article
1. Apply base
An applied base can be added for the whole axis or different applied bases can be used for each element in the axis.
- Applying a base to an axis applies the same base to all elements.
- Applying a base to an element applies the relevant base to that item.
- You can only apply a base to the axis or the elements but not both.
- Axis base overrides what was set up on at the element level.
Steps to apply a base:
- Select an element or multiple elements in your project tree.
- The contextual option copy as base is available under edit.
- Next, select the item or items to which you want to apply the base.
- The option apply base is available under edit.
Note that although you are applying one base definition, you can apply it to multiple items at once. - After clicking apply base, the information icon
displays next to the item. Hovering on the information icon shows information about the applied base.
In this example, we are using as base respondents whose visit expenditure is more than $2,000.
- Select the elements to use as base
- Select copy as base under edit
-
Select the item or items and click apply base under edit
Note: When you hover over apply base, the copied base you will apply displays in a hint file - After applying, an information icon indicates items with applied bases
- Hover over the i to see the base details
2. Auto base
Auto base lets you apply multiple bases on many elements at once, automating the process. Copy the bases from the axis level and apply to another axis with the same or similar element list. Instead of applying each different element base individually, when the bases applied come from an axis with the same element list, Harmoni applies them all in one go.
- Applying bases to the elements in an axis applies the base from each element to the matching elements in the destination axis.
- If all elements are not the same, bases are applied to all the elements that do match. You can manually add each non-matching element.
- You can only apply auto base to an axis, not to individual elements.
Steps to apply auto base:
- Select an axis, and the contextual option copy as auto base shows in the design menu.
- Under edit, choose the option copy as auto base.
- Select the axis that has the same or a similar element list to which you want to apply the bases.
- Under edit, select apply auto base.
- An information icon
displays next to all the elements.
- Hovering on the information icon shows information about the applied base.
In the following example, bases are applied to the elements in the Tried in the Last 3 Months - Awareness Base axis. The bases are copied from the Total Brand Awareness axis which has a similar element list.
- Select the axis that contains the element bases
- Click the copy as auto base option under edit
- Select the axis with the matching element list
- Click apply auto base under edit.
- The bases are applied to the matching elements
- The information icon displays next to each element where a base is applied.
3. Apply Bases to Grids
Depending on whether you need to apply one or multiple element bases, you can use apply base or apply auto base.
Apply Base
- Applying a base to an axis in a grid applies the same base to all elements for just that axis.
- Applying a base to elements within a grid applies the same base to all axes.
- If a base is applied both to an axis and an element in a grid, the element base overrides what was set on the axis.
Apply Auto Base
- Copy the single axis with matching elements to the grid and apply to the whole grid or to an axis in the grid.
- Applying bases to one axis in a grid applies the elements as a base for that axis, but will not show the information icon on the elements as it does not apply to all axes in the grid.
- Applying bases to the elements in a grid applies the bases across all axes in the grid and the information icons will show on the elements in the grid.
The two examples below show the following options for applying auto base:
- Copy an axis with similar elements to apply bases to one axis and all its elements within a grid.
- Copy an axis with similar elements and apply element bases to the whole grid.
- Select the axis with the element bases you want to copy
- Click copy as auto base under edit
- In the grid, select an axis and apply auto base
- Element bases are applied, but no icon displays
- Select the axis with the element bases you want to copy
- Click copy as auto base under edit
- In the grid, select the Elements label
- Click apply auto base under edit
- An information icon next to each element indicates the base is applied
4. Apply Bases to Headings
Headings
If you have a group of axes under a heading that all contain similar elements, you can use auto base to apply bases across all the axes at once.
In this example, a variable has been prepared with the required bases to be applied in the FREQUENCY section.
- Select the axis to use for the bases
- Click copy as auto base
- Select the heading and click apply auto base.
- An information icon appears next to each axis with the applied base
Note: The order of the elements used for the base does not need to match the order of the axes where the base is applied. Harmoni matches the label.
Grid Header
In a similar manner, bases can also be applied to a grid heading. In this example, brands in awareness match brands in the imagery grid and can be used as a base for each axis.
- Select the axis to use for the bases
- Click copy as auto base
- Select the grid header and click apply auto base.
- An information icon appears next to each axis in the grid with the applied base
5. Remove a base
- The applied base can be removed using remove base option under edit.
- If multiple elements need the bases removed, select all the elements and use remove base.
- Select the item or items with a predefined base
- Click remove base under edit
6. Save a base
When auto sync mode is off, you can use save base or save auto base under edit to save. Once your work is done, you can apply all the changes once your work is done. Learn more.
