Harmoni has many ways to set bases for percentages and averages. An analyst can take control using Harmoni's Total Type options.
In this article
1. Total Type Options
The Total row or column in your analysis table displays the total. It seems simple, but what is a total? Does it include all respondents? What if they weren't asked the question? What if you don't want to include the Don't Knows? Harmoni makes it easy to base your results on the right group of respondents.
There are four options available:
- Total
- Total (qualified)
- Total (analysis)
- Total (view)
Unless different bases have been set on the elements included in the analysis, one of the Total options is used as the denominator The number the count is divided by, when calculating a percentage. or base See bases article for more information on changing bases. for the percentage and average calculations in the body of the table.
In Harmoni, Total options can be found under Totals in the modify menu.
You can also turn the totals on and off. Learn more about showing and hiding totals in an analysis table.
1. Total Type Definitions
There are four different Total options.
| Total Options | Description | Useful When |
|
Total |
All records in the source(s)A source is a collection of data that is either in an imported file or in a connected data store. Learn more about Data Sources. |
You want the calculation to be based on all those in the relevant sources of the project. |
|
Total (qualified) |
All records excluding missing values. All records that have responses for the variables included in the analysis regardless of whether or not all items in the variable are included, or displayed in the analysis. |
You want the calculation to be based on all those records included in the analysis variables rather than all records in the sources where the variable exists. |
|
Total (analysis) |
All records excluding missing values and unselected items. All records that have responses for the variable items selected in the analysis, regardless of whether or not those items have been hidden from the display. |
You want the calculation to be based on all those records included in the variable items selected and dropped into the analysis area regardless of being in the display. |
|
Total (view) |
All records excluding missing values, unselected and hidden items. All records that have responses for the variable items displayed in the analysis. Excludes records specific to items that have been hidden from the analysis display. |
You want the calculation to be based on all those records included in the variable items visible in the analysis area. |
A default Total option displays in an analysis and the default setting can be changed through personalization keys if required.
- The Total is displayed on the top row/leftmost column of each section of a table.
- The Total is a count of records with no double counting.
- Totals by default display weighted counts.
- Unweighted counts can be set as a default using personalization keys.Keys that can be applied at the user, site (all users), or company (all users) level. Contact support@infotools.com for more information.
a. Total
- Includes all records in each of the sourcesA source is a collection of data that is either in an imported file or in a connected data store. Learn more about Data Sources. that contain the variables included in the analysis.
- Useful when you want the calculation to be based on all those in the relevant sources of the project.
- The Total will automatically adjust to reflect the sources in which the variable exists. This is particularly useful when you have rotating modules in your survey or when items (i.e. brands) come in and out of a survey.
In the example below, the total sample is 2,600 respondents. With the Total Type, Total selected, the results are based on all respondents.
In the following tables, the focus is on Exceeded expectations to show the change as each Total option is displayed.
|
Variable |
TotalAll records in the source(s) containing the variables. |
% |
|
Exceeded Expectations |
2,600 |
14% 354/2,600 = 14% |
Note: Totals may be different for elements if the variable is not present in all sources.
b. Total (qualified)
- All records excluding missing values.
- Includes all records that have responses for the variables included in the analysis, regardless of whether or not all items in the variable are included, or displayed, in the analysis.
- Useful when you want the calculation to be based on all those records included in the analysis, rather than all records in the sources where the variable exists (i.e. Total).
- Total (qualified) is useful when you want results to add to 100% for single response questions.
In this example, the same question about Trip Expectations is now based on only those who answered the questions, i.e., missing values are excluded.

c. Total (analysis)
- All records excluding missing values and unselected items.
- Includes all records that have responses for the variable items selected in the analysis, regardless of whether or not those items have been hidden from the analysis display.
- Useful when you want the calculation to be based on all those records included in the variable items selected and dropped into the analysis area, regardless of being in the display.
- Total (analysis) excludes items that are hidden in the project tree for users, other than the project owner.
In this example, only the first three elements in the axis have been dragged to the analysis area. Total (analysis) uses only the three elements in the analysis to calculate the base. The Not Sure item was not dragged and it is excluded from the base.

d. Total (view)
- All records excluding missing values, unselected and hidden items.
- Includes all records that have responses for the variable items displayed in the analysis
- Excludes records specific to items that have been hidden from the analysis display.
- Useful when you want the calculation to be based on all those records included in the variable items visible in the analysis area.
- Total (view) will exclude items that are hidden in the project tree as well as those hidden from your analysis. For users, other than the project owner, who don't have the ability to see which items have been hidden in the project tree, Total (view) and Total (analysis) will give the same results.
In this example, the whole axis (all elements) is dragged across, but the last two elements are hidden, using HIDE from the Modify menu. Only elements visible in the view are included in the base. When you HIDE an element, it is removed from the base with Total (view) selected.
Note: Hiding these two elements and using Total (view) has the same result as not dragging them over when creating the analysis, and using Total (analysis).
