After creating an analysis, there may be times when you want to rank the columns or rows, bringing the highest (or lowest) results to the top. You can use the rank option in the modify menu.
● Use Rank, under Selection, to rank rows/columns from highest to lowest or lowest to highest.
● When there are many calculation types in your analysis, you can control what you rank on.
● When you have a nested analysis, you can also rank across the hierarchies.
In this article:
1. Rank Columns and Rows
To rank an item, select the required column or row and click the Rank button. This reorders the items in an analysis based on their overall ranking. The entire table is ranked against this set-point.

Rank is dynamic, the order of the items refresh as you interact with your filters or update the data. Combining limit display with Rank allows you to show the top/bottom items in your analysis.
- Select a column or row
-
Click the Rank option to adjust rankings based on your selection.
- Click once to sort from highest to lowest.
- Click again to sort from lowest to highest.
- Click once more to remove the ranking.
2. Rank By
To change the ranking preferences, click the drop-down menu. Here you see the options to Rank by:
- Calculation types - select the calculation type to rank by
- Rank by last time period - always rank by the latest time period
- Across hierarchies - ignore any hierarchical structure in the analysis table.
a. Rank By Calculation Types
Harmoni lets you choose the calculation type to rank by when you have a mix of calculation types in your analysis. In the example below, percentages and indices are included as columns, so selecting a row includes multiple calculation types. By default, Harmoni will rank by percentages, but you can change the calculation type, by using the drop-down menu to select indices.
To rank the columns, you simply need to select the calculation type you want to rank and click Rank. To change to a different calculation use the drop-down menu to select the other calculation type. You can also manually select any calculation type in the columns to rank by that calculation type.
- Select a row with multiple calculation types.
- Click Rank to rank by percentages
- Use the Rank drop-down menu to select indices
- Select a column with the calculation type to rank.
- Click Rank
b. Rank By Last Time Period
When you have a time axis in your analysis, you can force the ranking to be based on the latest time period available in your project.
Selecting this option before saving your analysis as a story view ensures that when the data is refreshed, your view is always based on the latest time period.
For example, in the analysis below, we want to always rank the Top 5 markets from highest to lowest, based on the most recent time period for any data update.
- In 2023, the top 3 markets were Australia, China, and the USA, followed by the UK and Japan.
Selecting the option to rank based on the last time period ensures the ranking is updated.
- When 2024 data is available. The ranking order updates and now the top 3 markets are Australia, USA, and the UK, followed by China and Japan.
- Select the most recent time period for your analysis ranking.
- Click to Rank and in drop-down menu select Rank by last time period.
- When data is updated, the saved analysis automatically ranks based on the latest time period.
c. Rank Across Hierarchies
Harmoni maintains its hierarchical structure when ranking. You can toggle the Across hierarches option to rank based on the selected column, ignoring the hierarchical structure. Use Rank across hierarchies with nested axes or expanded classification axes.
- Select a column for your rank reference in the analysis table.
- Turn on Rank and choose Rank across hierarchies from the drop-down menu.
- The analysis ranks based on the values of the selected column, overriding the hierarchies of the nested elements.
