Using the Suppress feature allows you to hide zeros and nulls in your analysis table. This removes the dashes or 0% when there is no data.
Suppress Zero removes rows and/or columns when the numerator is zero, while Suppress Null removes rows and/or columns when the numerator and denominator are zero. Suppress is available in the modify menu.
In this article
1. Suppress
Click the Suppress icon to hide both zeros and nulls in one go. The labels ZERO and NULL are displayed in orange when they are both turned on. You can also access the options in the drop-down menu to turn them on or off individually. Suppression only applies if an entire row or column has null or zero values.
a. Suppress Zero
This feature removes columns and/or rows from your analysis when the numerator is zero. With only the Suppress Zero option ticked the modify menu displays the ZERO label next to the icon.
If you select a row or column, this option won't appear in the modify menu.
In the example below, the numerator is zero in the Shopping Tour element. Clicking Suppress removes the element because both Zero and Null are activated. With only Null turned on the element shows again as there is data in the base/denominator.
With only Zero turned on, Shopping Tour does not display, but if you add the Base calculation type, you see the element again as you can only suppress entire rows or columns with zero values.
- Use Suppress Zero when there are no responses in an answer (numerator)
- Click the icon to activate Suppress and both Zero and Null are turned on
- Use the drop-down menu to choose your option
- You can only suppress entire rows or columns with zero values.
b. Suppress Null
This feature removes columns and/or rows from your analysis when both the numerator and denominator are zero (i.e. the answer and base are zero). With only the Suppress Null option ticked, the modify menu displays the NULL label next to the icon.
If you select a row or column, this option won't appear in the modify menu.
In the example below, you can see that Don't Know displays with a dash, indicating no data. By selecting the Suppress Null option, the Don't Know column is removed.
Notice that although Suppress Zero is also turned on 0% displays in Rather Not Say. Add decimal places to the percentages to see that the values are not zero.
- Use Suppress Null when both the numerator and denominator are zero
- Open the drop-down menu and select the Suppress Null to hide null values
- If you choose Suppress Zero and still see zeros in the analysis, it's because the value isn't actually zero
- Add decimal places to view the value
