Classification axes contain hierarchical data. You can view the data contained in the hierarchies by using EXPAND from the modify menu.

1. Types of Classification Axes
There are two types of classification axes identified by their variable type icons.
- Standard classification axis
- Date classification axis
Standard classification axis
In a standard classification axis, the elements you see in the axis have been created by grouping data together. Classifications may be used to create trademarks, manufacturer nets, flavor groups, or any number of classification groupings required in the project.
In the example below, the Africa region is an element that is created by grouping all the countries of Africa. The individual country data remains available to expand.
Date classification axis
Time axes can be created using classifications. You can identify a date classification axis by the calendar icon. Date classification axes group time series data together, for example, 3MMT (3 Monthly Moving Total).

2. Expand a Classification Axis
Drag and drop the classification axis into the analysis area to view the netted results for each element. Once a classification axis is in the analysis table, you can select an element and expand the underlying data.
In this example, the Oceania element in the Region classification axis is expanded to reveal the countries grouped within the element. Once you expand one element, you can add any other elements by using the Selector.
Alternatively, you can select multiple elements from the analysis table, and then use EXPAND to expand them all at once.
- Create a table that includes a classification axis
- Select an element and click EXPAND from the modify menu
- Add additional elements using the Selector
Add Total Rows/Columns
When you expand a classification, Harmoni hides the Total row or column. If you require Totals, use the Selector to add them back in.
In the following example, the date classification axis, 3MMT, is included in the analysis. Expanding one 3MMT displays the three individual months. Using the Selector, add the Total column, which allows you to see the average across the three months.
You can also add additional elements which are automatically expanded and include the totals.
- Create a table that includes a classification axis
- Expand an element
- Add the total using the Selector
- Add additional elements
Rank Across Hierarchies
When you have expanded classifications in your analysis table, you may need to rank your table based on the items grouped within each element. To do this you can use Rank across hierarchies. Click here to learn more about this feature.
