In Harmoni, rating scale questions can be assigned a numeric value, which allows for an average to be calculated. In the analysis pane, an average (AVG) of the assigned values will automatically display when crossed by another axis. For an individual axis you can choose to add the average calculation type from the modify menu.

1. Assign Values to a Rating Scale
Any element within your project tree can be assigned a numeric value within an axis or within an element set inside a grid.
When selecting an element, the text assign a value appears in grey italics.
- Select an element. The text assign a value appears in grey italics
- Double click on assign a value to open a text field to enter your numeric value
- Once a value has been entered, click enter or click away to confirm
- The entered values display in your project tree
- Repeat for each element requiring a value
The entered values display next to each element in the project tree. You can double-click again to edit or delete the value if needed.
2. Analysis
Crosstab or Single Axis
When an axis with assigned values is crossed by another axis, the default behaviour* in Harmoni is to display the average of the assigned values in the total row.
If viewing a single axis (with no other axis in the other dimension), the average does not automatically display, but you can choose to add averages through the Modify menu.
*Note: If Harmoni's default settings are set differently, you may need to manually add averages to the total row in a crosstab.
Grid
When a grid with assigned values, is dragged to the analysis using split, the average of the assigned values automatically displays as an additional row or column.
- Grids with values automatically display averages in the total row/column when using split
If you cross a grid with another axis, or you drag in a grid and select nest, an average will not automatically display. There are two options for adding the average row.
- Click Elements to access the Selector and add the Total row or column. If you only want to see the averages for the total row in the table, Deselect All first and add only the Total in. You can then use replace in the Modify menu to view averages only.
- Alternatively, you can use the Totals ON/OFF switch to add in the Total Row. In a crosstab, you first need to turn the totals OFF (this turns off the total column that is displayed) and then click ON to turn both the total row and column on.
- Create a crosstab with a grid in the down drop zone
- No total rows display
- Select Elements from the interactive title and use the Selector to add the total row
- To display averages for each axis in the grid, remove all elements and add only the total row
- Replace the calculation type with averages
- Alternatively, turn the totals OFF and then ON to display the total row for each axis in the grid
Exclude Nulls from Averages (Key Required)
When Harmoni calculates the average in a standard axis it uses the assigned numeric values on each element. The sum of values is calculated for each element, and the total sum of values is divided by the total number of respondents/counts.
Total Sum of Values (∑) ÷ Total Counts (123) = Average
Any elements that do not have a numeric value assigned, for example, Don't Know or Not Answered, are not included in the Total Sum of Values, but they are included in the Total Counts. Total Counts reflect the Total TYPE you have selected.
The exclude nulls from averages feature let's you select the option to remove the nulls when calculating the averages. Any element that does not have a value can be excluded from the Total Count, adjusting the average accordingly. Access to this feature requires a personalization key. Please contact support@infotools.com to have this key turned on.
In this following example, the rating scale is from 1 to 10 and each element has a numeric value. Not Sure is also included in the rating scale but the Project Owner has not assigned a value, as it should not contribute to the Total Sum of Values. When the option to exclude the nulls is switched on, although the Total Count does not change on the screen, the calculation in the background updates. The Total Count now excludes the responses from Not Sure and the average updates from 9.18 to 9.24.
