Learn how to modify table layouts using Nest, Group, Grid, and Switch. With these options you can customize the analysis data to fit your analytical needs.
When you select items in the rows or columns of the table, options appear in the modify menu to help you reorganize the data. Use Deselect to remove any selections you have made across a table.
* Selections are contextual. All options will not appear at once.
In this article
1. Nest
After creating a grouped analysis with axes stacked down or across the table, you can select the axes in the table, and from the modify menu, click the NEST option to change to a nested table, the first axis in the group becomes the first axis in the nest.
- Top 5 Markets and Gender are in a grouped analysis
- To swap to a nested table, select the group header and click NEST
- Top 5 Markets is nested over Gender
2. Group
Change a nested table to a grouped analysis
To change a nested table to a grouped analysis, select both axes in the nest and click GROUP in the modify menu. The first axis in the nest becomes the first axis in the group.
- Top 5 Markets is nested over Gender
- Select both axes and click GROUP to change to a grouped analysis
- Top 5 Markets becomes the top axis in the group
Change a nested grid to a grouped analysis
If you drag in and nest a grid, you can select either the axes or the elements to see the GROUP option. You do not need to select both items. In the example below, only the elements are selected.
Change a split grid to a grouped analysis
If you start with a split grid in the analysis, you can change it to a grouped analysis.
Select the header in either the across or down dimension and click GROUP. If needed, use flip to rotate the table.
- Select the header in the across dimension
- Click GROUP
- Click flip to rotate the axes
- Select the header in down dimension
- Click GROUP and the axes are grouped in the down dimension
3. Grid
Change a grouped analysis to a grid
If you create a grouped analysis with axes that share the same elements, and you decide you need a grid instead, it's easy to change this. Select the group header and click the GRID option from the modify menu.
- Two axes with the same elements are in a grouped analysis
- Select the group by clicking the group header
- Click GRID from the modify menu
- Use Flip, if you need to rotate the dimensions
In the above example, the two axes selected are not part of a grid, but if you have dragged in two axes from a grid and have created a group, you can also use GRID to convert the analysis to the grid format.
4. Switch
When you drag a grid into an analysis and use NEST to create the table layout, you can switch the order of the nested axes.
- Drag a grid into an analysis, use NEST for the layout.
- Select either the axis or the elements header, and click SWITCH from the modify menu.
- The elements are now first in the nest.
- Select and click again to switch them back.
If you drag an axis into one of the dimensions before you drag a grid in, Harmoni automatically creates a nested analysis. You can also use the SWITCH option to reverse the nesting order.
- Drag an axis to one dimension and a grid into the other
- Select the header from either the elements or axes and click SWITCH
- The elements are now first in the nest
- Select and click again to switch them back.
SWITCH is only available for a grid. You will not see this option for a nested table.
If you SWITCH a nested grid, so the elements are first, then use GROUP, Harmoni reverts the order so the elements sit below each axis in the group, as displayed in the project tree.
5. Deselect
When you select rows and/or columns in an analysis, the DESELECT options becomes available in the modify menu. Use DESELECT to clear any selections you have made in the table. This can be especially useful when selections you have made in large tables are now off screen.
If you select an individual cell, DESELECT is not available. Click the cell again to remove the selection.
