Selector settings help Creators and Explorers customize their analyses and set guardrails for viewer interaction with tables and charts. This is beneficial for sharing or presenting contextual information in Dashboards and Stories.
There are logical default settings accessed through the selector menu, and you can customize these. By controlling the axes displayed in the selector menu and modifying default labels, you can make your data stories more relevant and user-friendly.

1. Access the Selector Settings
When you access the Selector, the settings icon is available at the top right of the Selector panel. The settings option is controlled using personalization keys, so if you are unable to see the icon, please contact Support@infotools.com for more information.
The following options are available in settings.
Guardrails to control the selection for a shared, saved analysis. You can predetermine which variables can be adjusted in the analysis by other users when exploring data and modifying selections in the across, down or filter dimensions.
Edit Total/Group Label allows you to replace the Total or Group label with a label of your choice.
Click on any item in the interactive title to access the Selector and then select the settings icon. Selector settings display all the information about the axes included in the table, irrespective of the item you click on in the interactive title. Click the settings icon again to switch settings off.
- Access the selector via the interactive title and click on the settings icon
- Click the + symbol to expand out the axis details
- Selecting a different axis displays the same Selector settings
- Click the settings icon again to return to the Selector
2. Control Access to the Axes/Variables
When creating a table, you can only see the axes in dimensions you dragged them to. Guardrails are in place to reduce the chance of people looking at data that might not be relevant to their decision-making needs. Using the selector settings, you can change which selection interactions are available to your audience. This is especially useful when creating Dashboards.
In the example below, Travel Style (Grouped) is in the down drop zone of the analysis, so is automatically included in the down when you access the Selector. You won't see this axis available when you select the across axis or the filter. To change this, use the settings to add it to the across or filter.
In the example below, the axes are only available in the dimensions they have been dragged to.
- Down - Travel Style (Grouped)
- Across - Top 5 Markets
- Filter - Gender (female selected)
Under the settings options, you can expand the Top 5 Markets axis and add this axis to the Down and Filter dimensions. As it is already in the Across dimension, this is set by default.
- In the Selector, only the axes dragged to the dimension are available in that dimension.
- In settings, Top 5 Markets is available in the Across dimension (ticked by default)
- Tick the boxes to add it to the Down and Filter dimensions.
- Viewing the Down and Filter dimensions in the Selector show the added Top 5 Markets axis.
Global Settings for all Axes
At the top of the settings panel there are options to apply global settings across the Down, Across and Filter dimensions.
Ticking the global setting option makes the axes not currently available in the dimension, show in the selected dimension. For example, ticking Down makes all items available in the down dimension. Notice that the items not currently selected are highlighted when you hover on the dimensions.
Show New Elements
When you drag in a whole axis and save the analysis to a story, when new data is added, if there are new elements in the axis, they are automatically added to the story view.
If you use the Selector to remove elements in the axis, the saved analysis will not update automatically when new elements are added during a data update. This can be useful if you want the elements to remain static.
If you want new elements to be added to the modified axis, tick the Show new elements option to have any new updates flow into the analysis.
3. Change Labels in the Analysis
Customize Total Label
Sometimes the default label Harmoni uses in the Total row or column is not what you need. In the Selector settings, you can change the Total label for a variable in the analysis.
In this analysis, the Net Promoter Score axis displays the average score in the Total row. However, the label is Total (qualified). Using the selector settings, you can edit the Total label and change it to a more descriptive label.
- Click the edit pen icon to change the Total (analysis) label to NPS Average
- The analysis table displays the new label
- The new label also displays when visualizing the data
- To revert to the default label, click the reset icon
Customize Header Label
When you drag a grid, multiple axes that share the same elements or measures into an analysis, Harmoni provides the flexibility to relabel the header, making your data presentation more descriptive.
Change the Grid Name
Grids may have been labelled during the project design phase, but the default name Harmoni creates is Grid. You can change the header name of the grid if required. The updated label will be displayed in tables, charts, and exports.
In the example below, the Total row label is updated along with the Grid name.
- After creating the grid, access the Selector settings
- Click the edit pen and change the Total label
- Click the edit pen for the header and change the grid name
Change an Auto Grid Header
Harmoni automatically organizes data into grids when you drag axes that share the same elements.
In the example below, the axis Overall - NZ Experience, which rates satisfaction, shares the same 1 to 10 rating scale as the Likelihood to Recommend NZ axis. When these two axes are dragged to the analysis area, Harmoni creates a grid displaying the axes with their ratings, with a default header name. You can change the header of the auto-generated grid.
- Dragging axes with same element to the analysis to create a grid analysis
- Harmoni creates a grid display the axes and shared items under a Group
- You can rename the group header through selector settings
Change the Measure Group Header
When dragging measures into the analysis, Harmoni creates a measure group. You can rename the measure group header for clarity.
- Drag the measures to the analysis area
- Click the edit pen icon next to the measure group header
- Rename the header
