When creating a dashboard, adding a Selector Container lets users access the Selector directly from the dashboard, so they don’t have to zoom in on each chart individually. They can choose different items and apply available filters to explore the data right from the dashboard.
To create a more focused filtering experience, you can add multiple Selector Containers and set each one to connect only to the relevant chart or table. You can control available filter options by showing or hiding axes in the Selector settings.

1. Creating Subsets
On a dashboard, multiple analyses may include the same or similar items. When you add a Selector container, it automatically identifies all items that are shared across every container on the page, including hidden items.
By utilizing the selector container subset options, you can control what users see when using a Selector on the dashboard. Multiple Selector containers can be added to provide multiple Selector options on the dashboard page.
- A selector container works when analyses share common axes in the same analysis drop zone.
- By default, selector containers apply filters to the entire dashboard page.
- You can create a selector with a subset, by linking it only to relevant chart or tables.
- You can customize the filter options shown in the Selector.
- A dashboard can include multiple Selectors, each with different items displayed and linking settings.
A Selector displays all shared items available across all chart containers.
Create a subset of groups and items based on the parent selector to reduce the number of options and make it easier to select and filter connected containers.
a. Add a Selector Container with Subsets
To create selectors with subsets that let different sections of a dashboard have their own filter menus, follow these steps:
- Setup your dashboard with the required analyses (chart containers)
- Name the containers so you can identify which chart each selector filters (optional)
- Add a selector container - by default, the selector is linked to all containers on the page
- Ensure you have the selector container selected
- Use Link to Containers to limit a Selector to specific charts or tables
- Use Show or Hide Axes to adjust items to display in the Selector
- In the General Settings, ensure the relevant Titles are switched on to identify the items in the Selector
- Save the dashboard
b. Link to Containers
When you add selector containers, all chart containers respond to the Selector. Follow these steps to link the Selector to only the relevant stories:
- Select a Selector container
- Under Link to Containers, use the checkboxes to select the relevant chart containers
- Connected containers are indicated by a blue outline
- Name each selector container to identify the chart it filters
- Set Titles to control interaction
- After you save, the Selector responds only to the linked chart
- With two charts in the dashboard, add a selector
- Uncheck a chart under Link to Containers
- Rename the selector and adjust Titles settings
- Click SAVE - the Selector applies only to one chart
- Add another selector container and keep all charts linked (default setting)
- The Selector applies to all charts
c. Show or Hide Axes
To manage the options available in a selector with subsets:
- Add a selector container
- Under Show or Hide Axes, select or clear the checkboxes to choose which items to display
- Save your changes
- Users can then select and view items using the available filter options in the Selector
- Two selector containers are added to the dashboard with only Filtered by switched on under Titles
- By default, the selector includes all available axes
- After saving, click the Selector title to view all options
- In edit mode, under Show and Hide Axes, clear a checkbox to hide an axis from the selector
- After saving, users see only the relevant options in each Selector drop-down
2. Create Multiple Selectors with Subsets
To let dashboard users interact with different Selectors and filter only the related charts, you can add multiple selectors subset and configure each one independently with its own display settings.
Selector Settings when adding a New Story View
When you add new story views to the page, newly added charts are automatically linked to the common selector. Existing selector subset groups keep their existing linked settings.
- Add a chart container
- Add a selector container
- Selectors automatically include the new chart
- Selectors with subsets keep their linked containers
- Name the selector container after the chart
- Adjust selector settings to filter new charts by subset
- Save and then use the selectors
Multiple Selectors with Different Settings
- Different linked containers
- Different display items
- Different visible axes
- Multiple charts and selector containers with different subset groups can be added to the dashboard page
Multiple Selectors with Grids
When you add multiple grids that share the same axes and/or elements to the dashboard, you can also add multiple Selector containers for each grid dimension, with each Selector having its own set of options.
After adding the required grids to the dashboard, follow these steps to create Selectors with separate subsets for the grid axes and grid elements:
- Add two Selector containers.
- From the Show or Hide Axes section, choose the dimensions for the Selector:
- Select the first Selector container - uncheck the Elements header to allow interaction only with the Grid Axes title.
- Select the second Selector container - uncheck the Axes header to allow interaction only with the Grid Elements title.
- If you use Text containers as filter buttons, make sure you place the Selector containers on top of the text using the settings in Arrange - click the Selector container and choose, Send to front.
- Turn off the content Visible option.
- Click Save.
In the example below, multiple grids with the same axes and elements are added to the dashboard page. The grids are both nested down with a time axis in the across. Two Text containers are used to create filter buttons, along with two Selector containers that allow users to select either the axes (Awareness) or the elements (Brands).
- Add a Selector container and position it over the Text container
- In Show or Hide Axes, uncheck Elements Header and adjust the title settings
- Add another selector container
- Under Show or Hide Axes, uncheck Grid Header and match the first container’s title settings
- Arrange both selector containers on the top layer, then turn Visible off
- Save the dashboard
- Click each filter button to view the options in the Selector
If you include grids that only have the same axes or elements, you will not see the dimension items that are not shared across the grids. For example, if the axes across two grids are the same, but the elements are different, although you see elements in the subset section of the settings panel, it will not list any elements under the header. Ensure that you hide the uncommon dimension under Show or Hide Axes, e.g., uncheck the elements box to remove it from the Selector.
