Dashboards are a way for you to organize previously saved stories and combine them with other contextual items. Use the chart container to add dynamic charts and tables to your dashboard that automatically update with new waves of data.
In this article
1. Chart Container
You can use the chart container to incorporate story views in your dashboard. Story views in your dashboard can be made of:
- Graphs
- Single Number
- Tables
When you click the chart tile from the container type options, the STORIES menu opens providing access to all your stories.
Add a Chart (Story View)
To include a chart in your dashboard, first create the chart and save it to a story. Once your story view is saved, you can drag it into the chart container on your dashboard.
- Select the Chart container.
- This opens the STORIES menu. Navigate to the story and find the required story view.
- Click and drag the view down to the dashboard canvas which you can see at the bottom of the screen below the STORIES menu curtain.
- Customize your chart container. Learn more about container general settings.
- Save.
- In edit mode, select the chart container
- From the STORIES area, drag the required story view to the dashboard canvas
- Drop it onto the canvas and customize the container
- Save
- Viewers can interact with charts on the dashboard
It is good practice to SAVE your changes as you make progress
2. General Settings
When displaying charts on dashboards, controlling what you see is important to the overall design. In the General Settings, Harmoni has options for you to customize not only the size and shading, you can also choose whether to display titles, axis names, labels, legends, etc., to help create the perfect dashboard.
Container Name and Type
Naming the container is useful when you want to manage the visibility of containers. It's possible to control what different groups of users see and this is achieved using personalization keys. Contact support@infotools.com for help with this.
The type of container you have selected is identified here. This can be useful when you have many layered container types.
- Select the container and rename it in the Name field
- The container type displays the selected container's type (e.g., chart)
Content
The Content section lets you manage features such as zooming, hiding the chart, and displaying information about your analysis settings.
| Settings | Views from a Story |
|---|---|
| Source | Allows you to replace a chart while retaining existing settings. Click REPLACE and then SELECT another story view to update the content. |
| Allow Zoom | On by default, this allows the user to click the zoom icon and expand a chart to full size. Toggle off to remove the zoom icon. |
| Hide charts when zoomed out | Toggle on to hide the chart, leaving a blank container. This feature is useful when combining two charts to display alternative data. You can create a custom zoom with a separate chart that appears only when zooming in. |
| Display more information | Switched on, access to the i icon in the bottom right of the screen is provided to show the analysis information. Toggle off to remove the i. |
Replace Source
Using the REPLACE option, you can change the source story view (chart or table) while retaining any settings you have set in the chart container.
To change the source within the chart container, click the REPLACE button. This opens the STORIES area where you can browse through all stories. Hover over a story view and click the SELECT option to select the view. The chart updates with the new source while keeping all your previous chart settings. This is particularly useful when duplicating a dashboard to create a new, but similar page. Simply update the charts and/or tables while retaining the format and settings.
- In dashboard edit mode, select the chart container
- Next to Source under Content, click REPLACE
- From the STORIES area, SELECT the replacement story view
- Save the dashboard
Allow Zoom and Display more information
- By default, a saved dashboard chart displays the zoom and information bar icons
- Switch to edit mode and from the content section, toggle the settings off to hide the icons
- In the dashboard, the icons are not available
You can switch off the edit pen to preview the dashboard view, but switching the edit pen off does not save the dashboard.
Hide charts when zoomed out
In a dashboard it can be important to display clear, concise charts, but there may be more information needed. Harmoni allows you to customize zoom behavior using two chart containers. You can zoom a different chart from the one displayed on the dashboard page to provide additional information.
The first container shows a concise chart, while the second displays detailed information layered on top. By enabling the Hide Chart When Zoomed Out option for the second container, it only appears when the user clicks the zoom icon on the first chart.
It is recommended to label your chart containers when working with multiple, layered containers.
In this example, a table with a lot of detail is added to the dashboard and Hide charts when zoomed out is switched on. Another chart is added on top of the hidden table, but not covering the zoom icon, and this chart is visible on the dashboard. The zoom and information icon for this chart is turned off. Once the dashboard is saved, when the user clicks the zoom icon above the chart, which belongs to the table, the zoomed table displays. A text container is added here, with text explaining what will happen when a user clicks the zoom icon.
- Add a chart container and add the table/chart that will be hidden
- Toggle on Hide chart when zoomed out
- Add another chart container on top of the first container
- Turn off Allow zoom and Display more information
- Save the dashboard
- Clicking zoom, zooms the hidden data
When you adjust settings for one container, those changes will carry over to the next container you add to the dashboard. This does not apply to the Hide charts option.
Titles
The options under Title let you choose what labels from the interactive title to display in the chart using the ON/OFF toggles.
- Project Title
- Across and down axes
- Filter information
- Weight information
- Measure information
- Projection information
- Base on (percentages based on, e.g., Gender based on Age Group)
- Bubble Z (displays bubble size item name in a plot graph)
- Counting (displays unit of count options where available)
- Expand the Titles section to control chart details
- Use the ON/OFF buttons to toggle details on the chart
-
Information can appear on the chart as needed for analysis
Note: Turning off options in the Titles section only changes the view on the dashboard. On the dashboard page, titles are not interactive. When the chart is zoomed, the labels appear on the zoomed view and users can access the Selector via the labels.
Chart axes and labels
In this section you can control the visibility of the across and down labels, as well as adjust the font size. When long labels exist in horizontal charts, the width control allows for more/less space to be added to the left side of the horizontal bar(s) chart.
| Settings | Views from a Story |
|---|---|
| X axis & associated labels | On/Off to show labels displayed at the bottom of the graph. |
| X axis font size (px) | Enter pixels to adjust font size and press enter or use arrow keys. |
| Y axis & associated labels | On/Off to show label displayed on the side of the graph. |
| X axis font size (px) | Enter pixels to adjust font size and press enter or use arrow keys. |
| X axis & associated labels width | Available when using horizontal charts. Enter the proportion of the container width to be available for the horizontal labels. Max 100% and Min 10%. |
- Select a chart and use the ON/OFF button to toggle the X and Y axes and their labels
- Turning a label ON displays the font size adjustment option
- Selecting a horizontal bar graph displays the label width option
Legends
You can choose to show or hide legends or the legend header on your dashboard. Additionally, there are options to customize the spacing around and within legends.
| Settings | Views from a Story |
|---|---|
| Display | On/Off to display/hide the chart legend |
| Header | On/Off to display/hide the legend header |
| Width (%) | Controls the proportion of the container available for the legend. Max 40% and Min 10%. |
| Space between legends & chart (px) | Max 100px and Min 0px |
| Spacing of legend items | Max 20px and Min 4px |
- Expand the Legends section
- Turn off Display to hide the legend
- Turn off header to remove the legend's header
- Set legend width as percentage of the chart container
- Enter a pixel value to adjust the space between legends and the chart
- Adjust the the spacing of legend items
Size & Position
You can resize and reposition the chart container by entering values for width, height, X (from left), and Y (from top). The Lock display allows holding the size dimensions of the containers. This ensures that when the screen size changes or the scaling of the browser is adjusted, the alignment and overall design aesthetics remain as intended.
Once you are happy with the size and position of the container, use Lock Display Size on the container to enable appropriate scaling.
- You can adjust the container manually to your preferred size
- Expand Size & Position and enable Lock Display
- You can also enter values to resize and reposition
- Save the changes

Padding
Padding options allow you to create space around a container's content, giving extra room without having to move the dashboard element.
- The charts have been sized and positioned
- Use padding to adjust the charts within the container
- Enter pixel values for Top, Right, Bottom, and Left
Arrange
In the Arrange section, you can use the layering options like Send to Front, Bring Forward, Send Backward, or Send to Back to stack containers in the order you need.
- Expand the Arrange option
- After positioning the last chart container, use Send Backward
- Click once to move it one layer.
- Click again to move it one more layer.
- To move one layer in front of the background, use Send to Back, then Bring Forward.
To learn more about using the layering controls, review the Dashboards - Layering Containers article.
Background
To improve your dashboard experience, change the background color and opacity. Use the color picker or enter a Hex value for specific colors. Adjust transparency from 0% (transparent) to 100% (opaque).
- The chart defaults to 50% opacity in white
- Enabling lock display size may add an unnecessary frame to fit the container
- Expand the background and set opacity to 100%
-
Adjust the background color using the color picker or a hex value
Link
Custom Link allows you to link to other dashboard pages, story views, websites, and documents. You can use this option to create interactive charts that connect to other dashboard views or websites.
- Select the chart and expand Link to connect it to a dashboard
- Click the icon
to and select a dashboard page
- After saving, click the chart to open the connected dashboard
Tip: It may be confusing for a user to click a chart and be taken to another dashboard page or website. In this case, include text to explain the behavior, e.g., Click chart to access additional information.
