In Harmoni, the size of the project has no technical limitations. However, the number of records and the number of sources influence the time required for analysis. When creating a project or an analysis, it is important to consider these factors.
In this article
1. Project Creation Considerations
The number of variables in the dictionary, particularly the number of user-created variables, is the biggest influencer on response time.
The number of variables influences the loading time of the project tree.
We recommend keeping the dictionary to less than 500,000 items. The following are considered to be items in the dictionary:
- Each continuous variable = 1 item, e.g., Number of Shoes owned
- Each category in categorical variables = 1 item, e.g., Gender.Male
- Each cell in a yes/no matrix variable = 1 item, e.g., Brand.Attribute
- Each scale point in a scale matrix variable = 1 item, e.g., Brand.Attribute.ScalePt
- Each verbatim = 1 item
2. Analysis Building Considerations
In general, as the number of items included within the analysis (cube) increases, the longer it can take to process and render it to the screen. Factors that can influence the load time are as follows:
- Computer processing power
- Number of sources in the project
- A large number of items in the project tree
- Hierarchical structure of the project
- Analysis complexity including global filter requirements and constructions
Use these general recommendations as a guideline for analysis sizes (number of cells in a table) in Harmoni:
- Up to 1 million cells, e.g., 1,000 rows by 1,000 columns, are easily processed
- Up to 10 million cells is manageable when both suppression and pagination are enabled
- Up to 100 million cells when suppression is off and pagination remains enabled
